Client Overview
The Regional Health Alliance (RHA) is a network of 5 hospitals and 30 outpatient clinics, each using a different EHR system. This created severe data silos, leading to duplicate tests, incomplete patient histories, and delays in treatment, especially in emergency situations.
Key Challenges
- Inability to share patient records seamlessly and securely across the network.
- High costs associated with custom point-to-point EHR integrations.
- Patient matching errors leading to fragmented and inaccurate medical records.
- Concerns over maintaining HIPAA compliance while improving data accessibility for providers.
Our Solution
We developed a blockchain-based Health Information Exchange (HIE) platform that acted as a secure data-sharing layer on top of the existing EHRs. The solution did not store the full medical records on-chain, but rather a master index and pointers to the data, along with patient consent.
- A decentralized patient identifier was created to resolve matching errors.
- Smart contracts managed patient consent, giving individuals granular control over their data.
- An immutable log recorded every single access request, providing a perfect audit trail for HIPAA.
- Providers could query the network to get a unified, longitudinal view of a patient's record from all RHA facilities.
